Weekly, Bi-Weekly, or Monthly Cleaning? What Fifteen Years Has Taught Me

Every week I have this same conversation. A new client fills out our free quote form. I call them back. We chat about their home. And somewhere in the conversation they ask, “Should I do weekly or bi-weekly cleaning?”

Fifteen years in this business has taught me there is a real answer to that question. And it depends less on your budget than you might think.

WHAT I ALWAYS ASK FIRST

“Who lives here? What is your rhythm? Because your schedule is not about our calendar. It is about your life.”

— Leila Flores, Owner

The Real Question I Ask Instead

Before I recommend a schedule, I ask a few gentle questions:

  • Who lives in the home? Adults, kids, pets, elderly parents?
  • How many people work from home?
  • Do you cook every night, sometimes, or almost never?
  • Do you entertain guests often?
  • Do you have allergies or asthma in the household?
  • What time of day are you most likely to be home?

The answers tell me what your home needs. Because a family of five with two dogs and three home-cooked meals a day has different cleaning needs than a couple who eats out most nights and travels every other weekend.

Bi-Weekly Cleaning is the Sweet Spot for Most Homes

Here is what I have observed over fifteen years. About seventy percent of the homes we clean thrive on bi-weekly residential cleaning. That is a clean every fourteen days. It keeps your home in a great baseline state without becoming overwhelming or excessive.

Between visits, the average family can maintain the home with light daily tidying. Dishes after dinner. A quick wipe of the counter in the morning. Making the bed. Nothing crushing. Nothing shameful. Just light upkeep.

Bi-weekly works because it is enough contact time for us to keep the home consistently maintained without letting it go long enough that we have to spend an hour just catching up on what accumulated.

When Weekly Cleaning Is Actually Better

Weekly cleaning is right for certain households. Here is when I recommend it:

  • Homes with three or more children under twelve
  • Homes with multiple large pets (Golden Retrievers, big shedders)
  • Households where someone has severe allergies or asthma
  • Executives who entertain clients from home regularly
  • Families where both parents work long hours and truly cannot maintain anything between visits
  • Homes with light-colored carpets or lots of white surfaces that show every mark

In these homes, bi-weekly leaves too much to be caught up on between visits. Weekly cleaning is not indulgent. It is appropriate for the load the home is carrying.

When Monthly Cleaning Actually Works

And monthly cleaning has a place too. It works well for:

  • Empty nesters or singles who travel most weekends
  • Couples with no pets and one shared home office day per week
  • Homes primarily used as a home base between weekend trips
  • Someone who does most of their own maintenance but wants one deep touch per month

Monthly cleanings tend to be longer visits because they are catching up on more accumulation. Which is fine, as long as the home does not get so cluttered between visits that maintenance mode is unpleasant to live in.

The First-Time Deep Clean

No matter which schedule you choose, we always start every new client with a first-time deep cleaning. This is not optional. It is the reset that makes recurring cleanings effective.

Think of it like scheduling a personal trainer. You need a baseline assessment before you can do meaningful weekly workouts. The deep clean is that baseline. It resets the home to a state we can maintain going forward.

Common Questions Our Clients Ask

How long has DVL been in business?

Fifteen years and counting. Owner Leila Flores started DVL in 2010 with a commitment to combine professional cleaning standards with the warmth of a family-run business. That balance has defined every hire, every process, every client relationship since.

What cleaning products do you use?

Our default product set is EPA Safer Choice certified, pet-safe, and family-safe. For clients with specific chemical sensitivities, allergies, or asthma, we switch to full green-certified alternatives at no premium. Just tell us at booking.

Are your team members insured and bonded?

Yes. Every team member carries full liability insurance and is bonded. Every team member has passed a background check, verified annually. This is not marketing language. It is our operating minimum.

Will I have the same cleaning team every visit?

Yes. Same-team-every-visit is our foundational policy. Our clients typically have the same 2-person team for years. This is why our team members are familiar faces in our clients’ Ring cameras and neighborhoods.

What if something is missed or does not meet expectations?

We come back within 24 hours to make it right. Free of charge. This come-back guarantee has been part of DVL from day one. It reflects our commitment to actual quality, not marketing promises.

Do you serve areas outside your listed cities?

Yes. Our primary service area covers Alexandria, Arlington, Fairfax, Falls Church, McLean, Vienna, Tysons, Woodbridge, Lorton, Fort Hunt, Manassas, and Prince William County. We serve select clients in DC and other DMV neighborhoods on request. Ask us if your neighborhood is not listed.

If You Are Choosing a Schedule

If you live in Alexandria, Arlington, Fairfax, or anywhere in Northern Virginia and the DMV, please reach out for a free consultation. I will personally walk your home with you and recommend the schedule that fits your life. Not the one that fits my calendar. The one that fits yours.

Your home deserves the right rhythm. And you deserve the peace that comes from knowing your cleaning is handled without stress.
