Every new cleaner who joins my team gets the same first-day speech from me. Not about products. Not about techniques. About how to be. Because I have learned that skill is teachable in a week. Character shows up on day one.
Here are the ten rules I give every new cleaner. Nobody else teaches these in cleaning school. They are what fifteen years has taught me.
MY FIRST-DAY SPEECH“You are not a maid. You are a professional caretaker of homes. The people who invite you in are trusting you with the most private space in their lives. Act accordingly.”
Rule 1: The Client Is Never Wrong About Their Home
If a client asks you to skip a room, skip it. If they ask you not to touch a shelf, do not touch it. This is not your home. Your job is not to improve on their preferences. Your job is to serve them within their preferences.
Rule 2: Speak First. Always.
When you arrive at a home, greet the client warmly. “Good morning, [name]. How are you today?” Never wait for them to greet you first. Set the tone. Own the arrival.
Rule 3: Photos Are Sacred
Never move a photo. Not to dust behind it. Not to “put it back better.” If it needs to be dusted, dust around it. Family photos are the emotional core of every home. Do not touch them without explicit permission.
Rule 4: Notice, Do Not Judge
You will see private things in every home. Bills. Prescriptions. Personal items. Notice for context. Never gossip. Never mention. Never remember.
| Situation | Wrong Response | Right Response |
|---|---|---|
| See a prescription | Wonder or gossip | Notice for HVAC or allergy context |
| See financial paperwork | Ever mention | Never mention |
| See marital tension signs | Judge | Give extra grace in cleaning |
| See child’s art | Move it aside | Clean around, never above |
| Find money | Take it | Set it on nearest counter |
| See client crying | Ignore | Ask quietly if she needs a moment |
| Find something broken | Blame the client | Report gently, ask how to handle |
| Overhear an argument | Stay to listen | Leave the room quietly |
Rule 5: If You Find Money, Leave It Visible
Sometimes clients leave money as an unofficial test. Sometimes they lost it. Never take it. Never move it far. Leave it exactly where you found it or set it on the nearest countertop where they will see it. This one rule has saved my business a hundred times.
Rule 6: If You Break Something, Tell Me Immediately
Things happen. A vase falls. A picture frame slips. Do not hide it. Do not blame someone else. Call me from the driveway. We handle it together. Honesty always beats coverup.
Rule 7: Work at Their Pace, Not Yours
Some homes need speed. Some need patience. An elderly client’s home should never feel rushed. A busy professional’s home should feel efficient. Read the space and adjust.
Rule 8: Never Assume How Long Something Should Take
Some kitchens are quick. Some kitchens take three hours. Do not force a standard timeline onto every home. Do the work well. Time follows.
Rule 9: Your Uniform Says You Belong
Every cleaner on my team wears a clean, pressed DVL polo shirt with our logo. Nobody works in street clothes. Not because it is fancy. Because when you walk into a client’s home in uniform, you say clearly: I belong here. I am a professional. This is my job.
Rule 10: The Front Door Handshake
When you leave, always tell the client goodbye. Look them in the eye. Say what was completed today. Ask if there is anything they would like handled differently next time. Then leave.
These ten rules are the difference between a cleaner and a caretaker. Every cleaner on my team knows them by heart.
What This Culture Produces
Common Questions Our Clients Ask
How long has DVL been in business?
Fifteen years and counting. Owner Leila Flores started DVL in 2010 with a commitment to combine professional cleaning standards with the warmth of a family-run business. That balance has defined every hire, every process, every client relationship since.
What cleaning products do you use?
Our default product set is EPA Safer Choice certified, pet-safe, and family-safe. For clients with specific chemical sensitivities, allergies, or asthma, we switch to full green-certified alternatives at no premium. Just tell us at booking.
Are your team members insured and bonded?
Yes. Every team member carries full liability insurance and is bonded. Every team member has passed a background check, verified annually. This is not marketing language. It is our operating minimum.
Will I have the same cleaning team every visit?
Yes. Same-team-every-visit is our foundational policy. Our clients typically have the same 2-person team for years. This is why our team members are familiar faces in our clients’ Ring cameras and neighborhoods.
What if something is missed or does not meet expectations?
We come back within 24 hours to make it right. Free of charge. This come-back guarantee has been part of DVL from day one. It reflects our commitment to actual quality, not marketing promises.
Do you serve areas outside your listed cities?
Yes. Our primary service area covers Alexandria, Arlington, Fairfax, Falls Church, McLean, Vienna, Tysons, Woodbridge, Lorton, Fort Hunt, Manassas, and Prince William County. We serve select clients in DC and other DMV neighborhoods on request. Ask us if your neighborhood is not listed.
If you want a cleaning service where every team member operates by these rules, we would love to serve you. Reach out for a free consultation. We serve Alexandria, Arlington, and across Northern Virginia and the DMV.
