12 Things I Have Found in Homes That Never Had a True Deep Clean

Some homes I walk into look pristine. Company-ready. Beautiful furniture. Fresh flowers on the counter. Then we start our deep cleaning, and I discover the truth. This home has never actually been deep cleaned.

Fifteen years in this business has taught me that a tidy home and a deep-cleaned home are not the same thing. And what accumulates in a home that has been tidy but not truly cleaned would shock most people.

Here are twelve things I have found in homes that had never been truly deep cleaned. Not to shame anyone. To help you understand what your home might be holding.

1. Six Years of Grease on the Range Hood Filter

The kitchen range hood filter traps grease from every meal. Most people never remove it. I have pulled filters out of homes where the metal mesh had turned into a solid brown block. Six years of undisturbed grease. My cleaner asked if I wanted her to throw it away. I said no. Let us try. Twenty minutes in a citrus degreaser bath. It came back to silver.

2. A Third of a Cup of Dust on Ceiling Fan Blades

Ceiling fans collect dust at a shocking rate. In one Alexandria home, I measured what came off the four blades of a bedroom ceiling fan. A third of a cup of gray fluff. Every night, the fan had been running while the family slept, redistributing that dust across their sheets, faces, and lungs.

3. Original Paint on Baseboards No One Had Ever Wiped

Some homes have been lived in for a decade. The baseboards have never been touched with a damp cloth. What looks like slightly gray paint is actually white paint under a decade of skin cells, hair particles, and airborne cooking oil. When you damp-mop the baseboards, the paint underneath is bright white. Homeowners are always shocked.

4. Dishwasher Gaskets Growing an Ecosystem

The rubber gasket around your dishwasher door is one of the germiest surfaces in your home. Moisture stays there. Food particles stick. Over years, that gasket grows a biofilm of bacteria and mold that never quite dies because bleach is not applied there.

LEILA’S TRUTH

“You cannot smell what has become normal in your own home. Your neighbors can. But they will never tell you. That is my job.”

— Leila Flores, Owner

5. Toilet Bolt Caps Hiding Two Years of Buildup

Those small plastic caps at the base of your toilet cover the mounting bolts. Nobody ever pops them off. Underneath, hair, dust, and cleaning product residue accumulate for years. First deep clean, we pop them. We are always startled.

6. Refrigerator Coils Wearing a Sweater

The coils behind or beneath your refrigerator collect dust. Real dust. A thick, gray blanket. This makes the compressor work harder and shortens the appliance life by years. In homes we deep clean, we typically remove enough dust from behind the fridge to fill a small bag.

7. Shower Head Full of Mineral Deposits

Water pressure declining slowly? Your shower head has been silting up with mineral deposits for years. Full deep clean includes shower head removal, vinegar soak overnight, and reinstallation. Your water pressure returns dramatically.

Toilet bolt capsNeverYears of hair & residue

8. Bathroom Fan Cover Choked With Lint

Your bathroom fan pulls moisture and airborne particles through a filter that nobody ever cleans. Over years, that grill fills with a soft gray felt. Fan efficiency drops. Bathroom moisture stays higher. Mildew appears.

9. Dryer Vent Backed Up (Not the Trap. The Vent.)

You empty the lint trap. Great. But the actual vent that runs to the outside collects lint too. When we deep clean the laundry area, I always look at the exterior vent flap. If it barely opens when the dryer runs, that vent is clogged. Fire hazard. Please call a professional dryer vent cleaner.

10. Faucet Aerators Full of Sediment

The small screen at the end of your kitchen and bathroom faucets catches sediment from your water supply. Over years, it slows your water flow. Deep clean includes aerator removal, cleaning, and reinstallation. Faucet performance returns.

11. Window Track Debris From Every Season

Window tracks collect everything. Pollen. Dead insects. Dust. Twigs. Cheerios your toddler dropped four years ago. Never emptied. This is one of the most satisfying deep clean tasks. It transforms how a home looks and how well the windows open.

12. The Space Behind the Toilet Tank

Six inches between the tank and the wall. Never cleaned. Ever. Nobody reaches back there. Deep clean, we do. It is not pretty. But once done, the whole bathroom smells different.
