10 Things Every Homeowner Should Know Before Hiring a Cleaner

Every week I meet a new client who tells me the same thing. “I have never hired a cleaner before. I do not know what I am supposed to ask.” Fifteen years in this business has taught me that most homeowners feel awkward about hiring help. That awkwardness costs them.

Here are ten things I wish every first-time cleaning client knew. Not to sell my service. To help you get the service you deserve, whoever you hire.

LEILA’S RULE #1

“If a cleaner cannot answer basic questions about insurance, product safety, or their team, they are not ready to be in your home. Period.”

— Leila Flores, Owner

1. Insured and Bonded Is Not Optional

Any professional cleaner in your home must carry liability insurance and be bonded. If they break something valuable, insurance covers it. If they steal something (rare but real), the bond protects you. If someone tells you “we are careful, we do not need insurance,” hang up.

2. Background Checks Should Be Standard

Every person entering your home for cleaning should have passed a background check. Ask. Any legitimate business will confirm proudly. If the answer is vague, that is your answer.

3. Same Team Every Visit Matters

Rotating strangers through your home defeats the point of hiring help. The same two-person team every visit means they learn your preferences, notice changes, and become familiar faces on your Ring camera.

4. Deep Cleaning First, Recurring After

Never start recurring cleaning without a first-time deep clean. The deep clean resets your home. Then recurring maintains that reset. Skipping the deep clean is like starting a diet without ever cleaning out your pantry.

Question to AskWhat a Bad Answer Sounds LikeWhat a Good Answer Sounds Like
Are you insured?“We are careful.”“Yes. Certificate available on request.”
Background checks?“We know our people.”“Every cleaner. Every year.”
Same team?“Whoever is available.”“Yes. You will always have Team [name].”
Products used?“Whatever works.”“Pet-safe. We can switch to eco if needed.”
What if I am not happy?“We will try harder next time.”“We come back free within 24 hours.”

5. Product Sensitivity Is a Real Conversation

If anyone in your home has allergies, asthma, or chemical sensitivities, tell your cleaner at booking. Any professional service will have eco-friendly alternatives. If they laugh or dismiss you, walk away.

6. Communication Should Be Two-Way

You should have direct communication with your cleaning service after every visit. If something was not right, you should be able to say so quickly and be heard. If you have to file complaints through a corporate app, you are working with a franchise, not a team.

7. Come-Back Guarantee Is Table Stakes

If something was missed, your cleaner should come back within 24 hours to fix it. Free. No arguments. If you have to pay for corrections, find a different service.

8. Price Should Match Scope

Cheap cleaning is expensive cleaning. Legitimate services quote based on square footage, home condition, and scope. If someone quotes you a flat rate without seeing your home first, they are either lowballing or overpromising.

WHAT NOT TO IGNORE

Red Flags to Walk Away From

1
No Address
Business has no verifiable physical address
2
No Insurance
Cannot produce certificate of insurance
3
Cash Only
Refuses card payment or contracts
4
Vague Scope
Cannot give you a written cleaning checklist
5
No References
Cannot connect you with current clients
6
Aggressive Pricing
Priced far below all local competitors

9. Written Checklists Are Essential

Before your first visit, your cleaner should give you a written list of what is included in each visit. Not verbal promises. Written. This becomes your quality baseline. You can hold them to it.

10. Trust Your Instincts

If something feels off during your initial consultation, walk away. This person will be in your home when you are not there. Your instincts matter. A good cleaner respects the weight of that trust.

Common Questions Our Clients Ask

How long has DVL been in business?

Fifteen years and counting. Owner Leila Flores started DVL in 2010 with a commitment to combine professional cleaning standards with the warmth of a family-run business. That balance has defined every hire, every process, every client relationship since.

What cleaning products do you use?

Our default product set is EPA Safer Choice certified, pet-safe, and family-safe. For clients with specific chemical sensitivities, allergies, or asthma, we switch to full green-certified alternatives at no premium. Just tell us at booking.

Are your team members insured and bonded?

Yes. Every team member carries full liability insurance and is bonded. Every team member has passed a background check, verified annually. This is not marketing language. It is our operating minimum.

Will I have the same cleaning team every visit?

Yes. Same-team-every-visit is our foundational policy. Our clients typically have the same 2-person team for years. This is why our team members are familiar faces in our clients’ Ring cameras and neighborhoods.

What if something is missed or does not meet expectations?

We come back within 24 hours to make it right. Free of charge. This come-back guarantee has been part of DVL from day one. It reflects our commitment to actual quality, not marketing promises.

Do you serve areas outside your listed cities?

Yes. Our primary service area covers Alexandria, Arlington, Fairfax, Falls Church, McLean, Vienna, Tysons, Woodbridge, Lorton, Fort Hunt, Manassas, and Prince William County. We serve select clients in DC and other DMV neighborhoods on request. Ask us if your neighborhood is not listed.
